Getting Ready For The Pembina 2017 Alberta Climate Summit

Getting Ready For The Pembina 2017 Alberta Climate Summit

I am in the countdown mode for the Pembina 2017 Alberta Climate Summit and I am stoked!

This year marks the 3rd annual Alberta Climate Summit and will showcase innovation and opportunities around clean energy, bringing together more than 500 leaders in industry, government, environmental NGOs and community stakeholders who will focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy, clean technology and innovation, methane control, climate finance, and Indigenous energy solutions. .

We will be set up at and presenting at the 2017 Alberta Climate Summit with our 2016 Nissan Leaf SL talking about all things related to Electric Vehicles and maybe even some on solar PV energy creation and the link with electric vehicle adoption.

I still have a bit of work left to do in washing the car and doing some detailing just prior to going down to the BMO Centre to get set up for tonight but the most part I think I have everything prepared as much as I can for the big event to take place tomorrow.

I will be at the vehicle during all of the breaks taking questions, giving out information and with a little luck and some multitasking, grabbing some pictures of the event to share on line after its all done.

If you are at the Climate Summit, come by and say “Hi” while you put your name in the draw for a ride in a Tesla by the EVAA.

This is going to be fun!

Is This The Range Extender Option We Need Now?

Is This The Range Extender Option We Need Now?

For many, the belief that electrical vehicles being great for in city but for that 2% of the time when you need to go out of town and take long road trips, the EV world is just not there yet are still valid to some degree. It is also true that over the years of electric vehicle adoption there have been many concerns about range and charging availability but there have not been a lot of options out there other than just buying as big of a battery you can get for the vehicle and wait for the infrastructure to come into being.

That seems to be changing, at least in France and soon (2018) in North America, with an interesting take on range extension and the ability to turn your EV into a quasi-hybrid with the EP Tender.

Rendu_HD_1.jpgThe EP Tender is a tow behind electrical generator that provides power to your electric vehicle, but what is interesting is it is being marketed as a service rather than a purchase of the unit.

You simply rent the trailer for those long trips you want to take and cut down on the expense of actual ownership like maintenance and storage.

The electrical attachment is a direct DC connection through the trailer hitch and is a one handed operation according to the video of the product (below) and the generator claims to be able to power all makes and models of electric vehicles using its built in 100 liter fuel tank and giving up to 20 kW of peak charging power.

There is an interesting PDF data sheet on the unit here.

It looks like they are taking tenders on dealers in the North American market now and are starting up implementation shortly.

2017 National Drive Electric Week

2017 National Drive Electric Week

Calgary National Drive Electric Week was again a lot of fun and a lot of talking!

IKEA donated a parking lot area for the Electric Vehicle venue and as a result of National Drive Electric Week being Platinum Sponsored by Nissan (and coinciding with the 2018 Nissan Leaf announcement), requested that a Leaf be placed at the front door of the store. We had the honour of having our 2016 Leaf being the flagship for the day.

The venue was awesome!

Both Donna and I attempted to engage as many people as possible, giving them information about the Leaf, answering a myriad of questions about charging, distances etc., and directed them to the other electric vehicle owners and vehicles on display in the adjacent lot.

I managed to run off and take some fast shots of the event in the other lot, but neglected to get a picture of our own vehicle at the front door (check out the pictures here).

We had a good range of vehicles from an electric skateboard through to a folding e-bike, to a Smart ForTwo, Nissan Leafs and a variety of Teslas.  We had hopes of seeing the elusive 2017 Chevy Bolts, the 2017 BMW I3 and the Fisker that have been seen running around in Calgary over the summer and welcoming the owners into the community; alas, the didn’t show.  I am undaunted however and will find them somewhere to get them included and to check out their very cool vehicles!

I have no idea how many people we talked to during the event, but by the end of the day neither Donna nor I had a voice left. When it all wrapped up, we were exhausted but overjoyed to have talked to so many people and answer so many questions.

I can’t wait for next year to do it all over again!

Sunday Drive To The Chinook Arch Meadery

Sunday Drive To The Chinook Arch Meadery

I organized a Sunday Drive event for the EV community for Sunday September 11 to a very cool location just outside of Okotoks, the Chinook Arch Meadery.

Chinook Arch Meadery offers up amazing selections of honey products, select smoked meats, ice cream and award winning mead.  The owners and staff are awesome people, very friendly, helpful and informative.  They offer up tours of both the bees and honey production as well as the meadery, making this a venue for all ages.

The venue was a hit for everyone! Adults and kids alike enjoyed the indoor bee hive, the ice cream and the outdoor hay bale maze. The adults liked the mead samples, smoked meats and honey products. For many of the electric vehicles owners who attended, mead was a new experience and it seemed that everyone enjoyed it.

We had several people interested in electric vehicles come out to get information and check out the event with a couple even coming from as far away as Lethbridge to be involved.

Overall, this was a fantastic day, a great venue, awesome people and a trip worth doing over and over again!  It was great hanging out with other EV owners and going someplace cool.  Huge thank you to all who came out!

Check out the pictures in the gallery.

Come join in the fun on future Sunday Drives!  Check out the events calendar for what we have planned next!

New Logo, Facebook Group And New Events Coming Up!

New Logo, Facebook Group And New Events Coming Up!

I am happy to announce that we have settled on a logo for the Website and for all of the Social Media!

We opted for a lightning bolt going through a yellowed Province of Alberta as a primary logo.  Our thought was that this shows electrification in Alberta and is an all-inclusive display of electric vehicles of all shapes and descriptions. Simple, clean and bold!

We are also happy to announce that we have a Facebook Group up for the EVAAB for general conversation, information and creating the social environment we hope to establish. Regardless if you have an electric vehicle now, are thinking about getting one in the future, or just trying to get information, jump in and get involved! We would love to have you!

We will be getting more social media connections and announcing them soon, so don’t feel left out if Facebook is not your thing.

You can also now follow us on Twitter @ev_evaab !

I am also happy to announce that I have just confirmed our involvement with the 2017 Pembina Climate Summit on Thursday September 28, 2017 and acting as a representative for the EVAA.

Image result for pembina climate summit 2017We will be not only attending the climate summit this year, but will also have our 2016 Nissan Leaf on display and answering questions on electric vehicles and electric vehicle ownership during the event breaks! If you are attending the event, please stop by and say “Hi”!

This year is the 3rd annual Alberta Climate Summit — the event for innovative thinking and knowledge sharing on energy and climate in Alberta. This year’s event will showcase the innovation and opportunities around clean energy that are already underway in Alberta.

The event will bring together 500+ thought leaders from industry, government, environmental NGOs, and community stakeholders to learn from success stories, identify opportunities and challenges, and explore solutions related to Alberta’s clean energy future.

This year, areas of focus will include energy efficiency, renewable energy, clean technology and innovation, methane control, climate finance, and Indigenous energy solutions. Read more about the sessions and focus areas here

More Updates Coming Soon!

As with all new prospects, there is a bit of a rough patch to get through and issues to sort out.
This venture is not any different.

Hang in there with us as we set up new logos and get this site banded.
I have hopes that will be completed by the end of the week.

We have started up a Facebook Group of to get the conversations going and will have more announcements shortly.

Getting Ready For a Busy Week!

Getting Ready For a Busy Week!

National Drive Electric Week is upon us again and we are getting ready to take it on in style!

To start it all off, we have the Calgary Drive Electric Expo coming up on Saturday.

This event is bound to be a lot of fun and a great opportunity to interact with the general public to answer questions on EVs and show what is available. Well worth coming out if you have an EV and even more worth while if you are looking to take the EV plunge!  Learn about EVs from the people who know – the owners!

IKEA is hosting the event again and celebrating EVs with us!  A huge shout out and thank you to IKEA for their involvement.

We follow this event up with a Sunday Drive where we will again have EVs on hand in an out-of-the-city location at a very cool spot. This event proves that EVs are not limited to urban environments and breaks the fears of range anxiety. What better place to do that than at a meadery?  Come join in the fun and check out what Chinook Arch Meadery and the Chinook Arch Honey Company have to offer!

This makes for a busy start of National Drive Electric Week, but we are not done!

We next follow this up with the September EVAA Coffee Meet!  Come join us for a coffee and chat on all things EV!  Wednesday is the date and Tim Hortons is the place for EV owners and people interested to come and have a beverage and talk about the EV world.

Central Alberta, don’t feel left out. We have action for you as well!

Edmonton Drive Electric Expo is up for the following Saturday and is again going to be an awesome time!  Lots of vehicles, lots of knowledgeable folks and lots of fun for all!

Southgate Centre is hosting the event for Edmonton this year and celebrating National Drive Electric Week with us!  Huge shout out and thank you to Southgate Centre for their involvement!

Now, all we need is you!  Come join in on one or all of the events you can and be a part of our community and National Drive Electric Week!

See you there!
